Commission for a New Lutheran Church Workgroups and Committees Files 1981-1987

This series comprises records retained by the Rev. Mark W. Thomsen, and date from 1981-1987. They include meeting agenda and minutes, financial spreadsheets, typewritten and handwritten business correspondence, planning documents, and reports. There are materials related specifically to issues surrounding global mission work of the new church, as well as general organizational issues. For example, in addition to budget figures for the new Division for Global Mission, there is also budget information pertaining to other new divisions as well as offices and commissions. Rev. Thomsen received documents of both kinds in his capacity as a committee member and director of a programming unit for one of the merging churches. Many of the records have handwritten annotations and several records are Rev. Thomsen's handwritten notes, particularly for budgeting and personnel issues. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.

The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Representatives from each of the constitutent churches formed the Joint Union Committee in 1950 to effect the merger. Presidents of the constituent bodies at the merger were Henry F.
